I love, love, love this book. What a great find for our family book tour of Mexico! There is a sticker at the top of this book that says it won an award for picture book illustration. Well deserved!
Senor Calavera pays a visit to Grandma Beetle unexpectedly and tells her that it is time for her to go with him. Grandma Beetle buys more time from him by making ten different excuses. Finally, she makes him guest number 10 at her birthday party along with her nine grandchildren. Senor Calavera enjoys Grandma Beetle’s birthday party so much that he decides to leave her alone and come back again next year to attend her birthday party again.
As Grandma Beetle makes her ten excuses, the readers learn to count from one to ten in Spanish. My boys and I certainly can count from 1 to 10 in Spanish now. One of my boys asked me a couple of times why Grandma Beetle doesn’t want to talk to Senor Calavera. I told him that it’s because Senor Calavera is death and Grandma Beetle (while she is not afraid of death) is not ready to die yet because she wants to enjoy her birthday party with her grand children first. There were no further questions on this subject.
The moral: don’t mess with grandma because when death comes knocking on her door unexpectedly, she makes him a guest at her birthday party and gives him a seat at her dining table. The illustrations are bright and colorful. The story is amazing!
